Varietal(s): Chenin Blanc, macerated for 10 days during fermentation with 8 additional weeks on skins during maturation
Vineyard Management: Practicing Organic, Dry-Farmed
Winemaking: Native yeast fermentation, Unfined/Unfiltered, 00
Vegan: Yes
Typicity: Atypical for Chenin Blanc, as this bottling exhibits more tart flavors from the fermentation process. Extensive maceration on skins leaves a distinct departure from typically in both color and flavor profile. I love this wine for its singularity.
Bio: Johan "Stompie" Meyer was already a name amongst South African winemakers before teaming up with Ben Henshaw of Indigo Wines to create Force Celeste (formerly Force Majure) wines. The Chenin based whites and red blends were an instant success, so they upped the ante creating another label, Mother Rock.
Mother Rock's focus is on exceptional small parcels of vines, grown in rare soils around the Cape. Meyer only uses native yeast and no additions during fermentation. The wines are bottled without fining or filtering and only a small sulfur addition, though now he seems to prefer zero additions at all.
