2018 Trimbach, Gewurztraminer | Alsace, France

Varietal(s): Gewürztraminer

Vineyard Management: All 60 Ha of estate owned vineyards are HVE3 certified and are in the process of receiving Organic Certification. They also employ a flock of sheep that aid in soil enrichment and crop cover maintenance.

Winemaking: Native Yeasts (will intervene with cultured if the fermentation will not go to full dryness), permits sulfur additions at bottling

Vegan: Yes

Typicity: Typical. Trimbach is a 'Benchmark' producer exhibiting classic styles of Alsatian wine. This is also my absolute favorite wine from them.

Bio: Trimbach is Alsace's largest and most well known winery. Situated in the town of Ribeauvillé, not far from its humble beginnings in Riquewihr in 1626, and is still family owned and operated today. The 13th generation cultivates in as much the same way as Jean Trimbach did. Like most of France, the family has moved away from conventional viticulture and to organic practices with a stronger focus on soil health and biodiversity.

What sets the Trimbach family apart is their rigor in the cellar paired with judicious use of laboratory techniques to protect the wines at all points. All harvested grapes are weighed and potential alcohol measured by Pierre and Julien Trimbach personally. Each plot is vinified separately to be blended for what the family feels embodies their style. Racking is performed by centrifuge. All aging is determined by barrel tasting. At bottling, ceramic filters are used to remove any remaining sediment.
